Roj was a teenager who had profound and multiple learning disabilities. His vision was limited and he was non-verbal, being wheelchair dependent.
Roj was a student I saw very occasionally, yet a couple of these sessions were notable. On the first session I asked what music he liked and his support worker told me he liked the violin. I placed the iPad within his reach and set it to a violin synthsised instrument. On hearing my quick demonstration he was soon producing a most haunting violin composition with his right hand while fixing me steadily with his gaze. Roj continued to play, with a serene hypnotic countenance. I was told that he had only previously roughly manipulated iPads and never shown the ability to produce music with one.
I believe he was motivated through the close proximity of loudspeakers enriching the iPad sounds and of course the type of instrument chosen. He was able to repeat this in later sessions to his evident enjoyment.
